High School Summer Internship – TransAlt Ambassador (part-time/seasonal) at Transportation Alternatives

Fields: urban planning, infrastructure, sustainability, outreach, campaigns

Location: NYC, New York

About the Organization: Transportation Alternative’s mission is to reclaim NYC streets from the automobile and to advocate for better bicycling, walking and public transit for all New Yorkers.

About the Position: Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Conduct street safety outreach around borough-specific campaigns; Work with the Field Team Coordinator to meet shift goals for petitioning, canvassing and coalition growth; Engage communities citywide: speaking with people at tabling events, working in the street petitioning for different campaigns (we do not ask for money or fundraise on the street, however we sell memberships at four main events during the year), collecting signatures or petitions, going to rallies, possibly door to door canvassing in support of Transportation Alternatives’ mission; Be an outgoing and articulate model for safe and responsible bike riding in New York City; Build relationships with community-based organizations to foster support for safe street design and transportation equity on a local level; Manage and distribute canvassing, promotional and TransAlt membership materials

Special Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Fervent desire to make bicycling and walking safer in New York City
  • A genuine love of their borough and New York City
  • Ability to work in a team environment to meet deadlines and accomplish common goals
  • Strong public speaking skills a plus – an outgoing personality is also a plus
  • Different languages are welcome
  • Position requires a flexible schedule, including early morning and weekends
  • Work takes place mostly outdoors, candidates must be comfortable working outside
  • Comfortable engaging diverse community members face-to-face

Estimated Salary: $15/hr
