About the Organization: Transportation Alternatives’ mission is to reclaim New York City’s streets from the automobile and advocate for better bicycling, walking, and public transit for all New Yorkers.
About the Position: We are seeking a seasonal Events Volunteer Coordinator who is an organized, personable, problem solver to work with our events team. The Events Volunteer Coordinator will have a strong talent at recruiting quality volunteers for our events. They will also be responsible for the placement, training, and management of those volunteers. Transportation Alternatives is a volunteer-supported organization so your work will be crucial to the success of our events. This position will be temporary part-time (February – May) and will require night and weekend work as necessary for each event. Availability on event-day is mandatory, as well as the week leading up to the event: the Tour de Staten Island on April 28, 2019.
- Responsibilities:
- Promote volunteer opportunities and recruit event volunteers through use of TransAlt’s own database, and by developing new relationships with community and corporate organizations.
- Ability to research potential resources to recruit volunteers from
- Calling potential groups and organizations to ask for volunteers
- Track and maintain volunteer registration and volunteer database
- Deliver weekly reports to Events Manager on volunteer status for each pending event
- Create and maintain volunteer materials and communications
- Direct volunteer activities at events
- Lead volunteer training sessions
- Field volunteer inquiries
- Other responsibilities as needed
Special Requirements/Qualifications:
- Strong communication skills, ability to talk about T.A.’s mission and its events comfortably
- Ability to research potential volunteer resources
- Comfortable making cold calls to various groups to ask for volunteers
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Meticulous organization and good follow-up skills
- Comfortable speaking to large groups of people
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, Outlook and Google services
- **Bonus points:**
- Previous record of volunteer recruitment
- Familiarity with bicycling and bicycle tours
- Previous event experience
- Second language
