About the Organization: Clean Fairfax encourages environmental stewardship and urban sustainability in Fairfax County, Virginia through education, monitoring, programming and community involvement. Clean Fairfax reduces littering and encourages recycling, reusing, and reducing consumption through community clean-ups and adopt-a-spots. It conducts stream monitoring for the government of Fairfax County, and also leads the Litter Free Virginia coalition. Finally, it serves as a clearing house for environmental information in Fairfax County. Clean Fairfax is a 501(c)3 non-profit entity.
About the Position: This position is a wonderful opportunity for an early career conservationist to help build a growing organization. The Assistant Coordinator will be involved in all aspects of stream monitoring and education at Clean Fairfax. Hands-on stewardship and monitoring play a key role. This position will monitor specific streams and watersheds in Fairfax County, develop and coordinate clean up and education programs for adults, church groups, corporate groups, and community organizations. The Assistant Coordinator will report to the Executive Director of Clean Fairfax but will also regularly collaborate with members of the County’s Stormwater Management team and other non-profit organizations working on stream health and litter prevention issues in Fairfax County and the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Clean Fairfax is considering part and full time applicants depending on experience and interest. The Assistant Coordinator has the opportunity to participate and lead in other aspects of the organization if interested. The organization has recently launched its Litter Free Virginia (litterfreeva.org) initiative, a coalition of two dozen conservation organizations and Virginia residents to focus on litter prevention through local and state legislation. Clean Fairfax is also building a program to encourage corporate sustainability in the county and this position will likely help on that project.
Special Requirements/Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies or Science, Public Policy, Public Administration, Education, OR combination of 3 years of work experience and education in applicable areas.
- Open to applications from other qualified STEM candidates as well as those from public admin, advocacy, economics and other relevant fields because conservation is interdisciplinary by nature.
- Comfort and ease with public speaking (or willing to learn).
- Able to walk and stand for moderate periods of time, often through the woods and along streams.
- Interest in Environmental Advocacy, Education and/or Enforcement.
- Ability to write for different audiences (scientific reports, newsletter articles).
- Requires flexible schedule (occasional evenings and weekends necessary), reliable transportation.
- **Preferred:**
- Spanish or other non-English language skills will be highly valued.
- Previous experience with environmental monitoring and reporting specific to stormwater, water quality, litter prevention or other environmental areas
- Nonprofit office administration (WordPress, Google Maps, Quickbooks, graphic design, grant writing and reporting)
- Event planning/marketing
- Working knowledge of behavior change science
- Content management for website and social media
- ArcGIS Mapping
- Local candidates preferred. Sense of humor and knowledge of DMV region are a big plus
Estimated Salary: $20,000-$50,000/year for 15-37.5 hours per week – DOE
