About the Organization: The Center for Employment Opportunities (CEO) provides employment services to people with recent criminal convictions. Across the United States, over 5,000 people participate in CEO each year, transitioning to employment that supports themselves, their families, and their communities.
What began as a demonstration project of the Vera Institute of Justice in the 1970s to address employment barriers facing the formerly incarcerated following release in New York City has grown into the leading reentry employment organization in the country, where over 25,000 formerly incarcerated individuals have secured full-time employment since 1996. Since 2009, CEO has gained support to expand its programs through government, nonprofit, and private organizations including the Federal Social Innovation Fund, the Edna McConnell Clark Foundation, Robin Hood Foundation, and Rockefeller Foundation. In 2016, CEO embarked on a 5-year strategic plan to grow to serve 9,000 participants annually.
About the Position: CEO’s Young Adult Mentoring Specialists are individuals with relevant life experiences who help young adults engage, focus, and succeed at CEO and in their lives. Mentors serve young adults (ages 18-26) whose needs go far beyond the traditional mentoring approach of companionship, confidence-building, and career guidance. They enhance CEO’s program model by working as a team to engage and support mentees from recruitment through completion of their 365-day milestone and beyond. Mentors work closely with other CEO teams to improve youth engagement and retention through evidence-informed and developmentally-attuned practices.
Special Requirements/Qualifications:
- Commitment to and deep passion for working with justice-involved young adults
- 6+ months of experience working in a capacity to support young adults
- Direct personal experience with the justice system and/or living in a high poverty urban setting highly desired
- Experienced in identifying trainings needed by participants, developing workshop content, and facilitating workshops.
- Experienced in team and relationship building; ability to foster high morale and results
- Demonstrated aptitude for communicating effectively with people of diverse cultures and backgrounds
- Open to traveling over 60% of time
- Bilingual (English and Spanish) preferred
- Ability to effectively engage mentees and promote retention using a mix of personal persuasion and motivational techniques that respects their values and agency
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team to achieve goals with mentees
- Ability to work effectively in situations requiring a high degree of trust and transparency
- Ability to proactively create and/or follow through on new ideas and strategies

Estimated Salary: $42,000 minimum. Salary is commensurate with demonstrated experience and abilities. In addition, team members can receive health coverage, paid parental leave, access to a retirement plan, sick and vacation time, paid holidays, and more.
