About the Organization: Richmonders Involved to Strengthen our Communities (RISC) is an interracial, interfaith, nonpartisan organization which brings congregations together to build the power to meet God’s call to “do justice.” The member congregations of RISC are building powerful justice ministries so that they can get beyond the symptoms and solve serious community problems. RISC’s membership is composed of 21 congregations and a seminary in the Greater Richmond area. These congregations include people of all political persuasions, and from diverse racial and socio-economic backgrounds.
The Direct Action and Research Training Center, Inc. (DART) is a national network of 21 faith-based community organizations that unite congregations across racial, religious, and socioeconomic lines to pursue justice. DART organizations seek long-term, sustainable improvements at a systemic level. DART organizations engage in direct action assemblies in which thousands of people from a cross-section of faith traditions publicly hold decision-makers accountable on solutions to serious local community problems.
About the Position: We’re hiring a full-time community organizer who will build relationships with faith leaders and community members from diverse backgrounds, train and develop their organizing skills, and deepen their participation in the work of the organization.
During your first five months, you will receive intensive on-the-job training through the DART Organizers Institute. You will learn basic organizing principles and develop key organizing skills including: finding and developing leaders, issue research and strategy, power analysis, and one-to-one meetings. Ongoing professional development will continue through individualized coaching and mentoring, as well as local, regional, and national staff trainings and retreats. Special Requirements/Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience
- Core passion for justice and equality
- Exceptionally strong work ethic
- Willingness to be trained to work with religious institutions
- Excellent relationship building skills
- Ambition for a long-term career in community organizing with DART (minimum 3 years)
- People of color and fluent speakers of Spanish are strongly encouraged to apply
- Access to a car
- No prior organizing experience is necessary
- Proof of US citizenship, permanent residency, or deferred action for childhood arrivals
Estimated Salary: $38,000 annually to start plus health benefits, with regular cost of living increases and performance based raises (position range $38,000 – $45,000). For candidates relocating more than 50 miles, $250 is paid to help cover relocation costs. Employer retirement contributions begin after one year of employment.
