About the Organization: We work to develop a culture where women of African descent are fully empowered and where gender, race and other disparities are erased. We engage in progressive research, historical documentation, support movement building and organize on social justice issues steeped in the struggles of Black women within their communities and within dominant culture.
BWB is home to the Museum of Women’s Resistance (MoWRe). MoWRe examines the diversity, dynamism, and global influence of women of African descent and cultures over time in the realms of family, work, community, nations and the natural environment. MoWRe’s year-round exhibitions and programs include historical and contemporary objects, as well as commissioned art, sculptures, textiles, and pottery. Video and sound stations provide selections from historical and contemporary interviews, literature, proverbs, prayers, folk tales, songs, and oral epics from the African Diaspora.
About the Position: We are looking for interns specializing in History, Women’s/Gender Studies, Feminist Studies, or African Studies to help with the organization’s continuous Black HerStory Project. 14 hours/week. Must be in office. Some weekend hours needed. Internship tasks will include:
- Conducting research on the particular histories and lives of contemporary women of African descent around the world, and Black feminists in particular.
- Conducting oral history interviews with individuals who have not yet told their stories
- Visiting archives and libraries to collect information and documentation related to several research projects being conducted by Black Women’s Blueprint; Writing reports based on research findings
- Assisting with development of exhibitions; Planning tours and events
- Engaging community and recruit membership
- Writing short essays to be published on the website
- Additional tasks include, but are not limited to, classifying documentation findings; Planning museum programs; Supervising peers and youth involved in museum exhibition curation; Attending and planning Museum events.
Special Requirements/Qualifications:
- Specializing in History, Women’s/Gender Studies, Feminist Studies, or African Studies
- Excellent research and writing skills
- Strong social media use
- Strong computer skills, including Word and Internet applications
- Event planning skills
- Women of Color and LGBTQ are encouraged to apply.
Estimated Salary: $800/month. Flexible hours, at least 14 hours/week. This works out to $14.28/hour. You will receive credit on our website and educational materials for your work.
