About the Organization: BikeSGV’s mission is to make the San Gabriel Valley a safer, healthier, and more enjoyable place for cycling by: Educating the community about bicycle safety and the many benefits of cycling, including physical/mental health, air quality, and personal finance. Partnering with community groups, cycling clubs, public health agencies, and other parties to promote active transportation, improve air quality, and support multi-modal transportation planning. Informing and educating city staff and decision makers about internationally tested and proven forms of bike infrastructure that create safer streets for all road users: cyclists, motorists and pedestrians. Representing local cyclists and bike groups in the San Gabriel Valley on issues of regional significance. Supporting policies and legislation to increase funding for bicycle-friendly improvements.
About the Position: BikeSGV seeks a highly motivated Outreach Assistant to support the organization’s projects and programs. Under the direction of the Program Coordinator, the Outreach Assistant will support BikeSGV outreach efforts for projects, programs, and services aimed at advancing the organization’s mission. Individuals must be organized and prioritize workload; have experience in organizing and coordinating events; be self-motivated, with the ability to work effectively in both independent and team environments; possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to interact positively and effectively with colleagues, city staff and elected officials, corporate and philanthropic representatives, and community members; be comfortable working in a fast-paced, project-driven work environment; be able to work respectfully with people of all cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds; be willing to take public and active transit for work business; and be passionate about the organization’s focus area. This is an on-call, hourly position, averaging 14-19 weekly hours through September 2019.
Special Requirements/Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree (or currently enrolled) in social science, public policy, public health, urban planning and design, business administration, or similar field is preferred.
- Confident knowledge concerning issues, legislation, plans, and programs related to sustainable transportation alternatives, environmental justice, public health and safety, economic development, human rights, sustainable living, green infrastructure, recreation opportunities, nutrition, and physical activity. Willingness to lead by example by utilizing sustainable forms of transportation and zero waste practices (e.g., use of reusable water bottles), and promoting healthy lifestyles
- 1-year experience working on grassroots advocacy campaigns, and/or community events, with youth and underserved populations, is preferred. Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, especially public speaking.
- Preferred: fluent Spanish, Vietnamese, Tagalog, and/or Chinese (Mandarin or Cantonese) language skills.
Estimated Salary: $20/hour
