About the Organization: The Alliance for Justice is a national association of environmental, civil rights, mental health, women’s, children’s and consumer advocacy organizations. Since its inception in 1979, the Alliance has worked to advance the cause of justice for all Americans, strengthen the public interest community’s ability to influence public policy, and foster the next generation of advocates.
About the Position: Alliance for Justice is offering a 12-month public interest fellowship focused on strengthening our research, analysis, and outreach capacities to raise awareness about the importance of the courts and judicial nominees with communities of color, including Native American, African American, Hawaiian and Pacific Islander, Latino/Latina, and Asian American communities; and people with disabilities. Roles and Responsibility include:
- Monitor federal judicial nominations;
- Conduct research analyzing nominees’ records with a focus on immigration, voting rights, criminal justice, and other issues that affect specific constituencies;
- Assist with organizing and implementing campaigns around judicial nominations, with a focus on engaging particular constituencies (communities of color and people with disabilities) among law school communities, and national and state-based organizations;
- Identify and engage national and state-based legal experts, attorneys, and grasstops leaders to strengthen AFJ’s research capacity, identify public spokespeople, and further engage their communities;
- Work with communications and outreach teams to draft talking points, blog posts, web content, and educational materials such as fact sheets about the importance of the courts and nominees’ backgrounds;
- Attend Senate Judiciary Committee hearings, executive committee sessions, and votes;
- Attend coalition meetings; other as needed
Special Requirements/Qualifications: Those recently completing undergraduate or graduate programs or fellowships are encouraged to apply.
- Excellent research, writing, and oral communications skills.
- Ability to analyze and clearly explain concepts of law and public policy.
- An interest in federal law and the federal judiciary.
- Experience in advocacy and/or political work.
- Experience with outreach, political, and/or community organizing.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with all levels of audiences through various media, including phone, email, and in person.
- Demonstrated commitment to public interest.
Estimated Salary: $40,000 – $50,000 + benefits
