About the Organization: DC Central Kitchen (DCCK) is one of America’s leading nonprofit organizations and a social enterprise pioneer, using food as a tool to strengthen bodies, empower minds and build communities. Since 1989, we have prepared at-risk adults with histories of incarceration, addiction, homelessness, trauma, and chronic unemployment for meaningful careers in the food service industry. We in turn hire many of our graduates to support our social enterprise portfolio, which includes preparing 12,000 meals for our community each day, catering corporate events, and delivering wholesale produce to corner stores in low-income neighborhoods. About the Position: Launched in 2001, The Campus Kitchens Project (CKP) is DC Central Kitchen’s national arm and one of its five social ventures. CKP empowers students to create sustainable solutions to hunger, food waste, and poverty in their communities. On over 60 university and high school campuses across the country, student leaders transform unused, high-nutrient food from dining halls, grocery stores, restaurants, and farmers’ markets into meals that are delivered to local agencies serving those in need, all while building meaningful leadership skills. Our student leaders go “Beyond the Meal” by implementing community building initiatives that advance our mission of breaking systemic barriers that cause food insecurity, poverty, and food waste. Our six Beyond the Meal programs include Nutrition Education, SNAP Outreach, Health & Wellness, Financial Literacy, Awareness Campaigns, and Civic Education.

The Campus Kitchen Intern is a role filled each semester by a current student in the Campus Kitchens Project network. The intern will play a national role in shaping the CKP program during their time with CKP HQ. The intern will be the initial face for perspective schools and responsible for the initial intake process under the supervision of the Program Design Specialist among other assignments as needed.

Special Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Current college student who has volunteered with their local Campus Kitchen or is on its Leadership Team
  • An interest in and understanding of social justice, community development, public health, and/or environmental justice
  • Strong communication (written and verbal); Ability to work independently, problem solve, think creatively, strategize, and balance short and long-term goals
  • Demonstrated ability to understand, work with, and meet the cultural needs of diverse student populations
  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The position requires the ability to: travel independently via personal vehicle, train, and airplane throughout the year; perform general physical activities that require full range of motion, such as climbing stairs, squatting, kneeling, lifting items, driving, and sitting and standing for long periods of time; occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds

Estimated Salary: Upon completion, the intern will receive a $4,000 stipend. Start date, end date, and hours for the internship are flexible.
