About the Organization: Pure Earth is a New York-based international not-for-profit organization committed to solving pollution problems – a leading cause of the death in world, killing more people than HIV, TB and malaria combined every year – in developing countries. Pure Earth works to identify dangerously polluted sites in low- and middle-income countries and initiate their clean up, using its Polluted Places methodology to focus efforts on the most productive interventions. For the biggest polluted areas, Pure Earth works with local partners, including environmental authorities, to identify large-scale interventions for potential funding by international agencies. Pure Earth works in most regions of the world focusing on sites where human health, especially that of women and children, is most at risk. Projects are conducted in a cooperative fashion with all stakeholders.
Since 1999, Pure Earth has completed 110 pilot projects in 27 countries, impacting 4.5 million lives. In addition Pure Earth spearheaded the landmark pollution report published in 2017 in the world-renowned medical journal, The Lancet, which released new data on the health and economic impacts of pollution as well as the solutions. Pure Earth is a practical, can-do organization committed to improving the health and wellbeing of the disadvantaged of the world, especially children, who have no choice in their place of abode, and who are poisoned by industry and mining.
In late 2016, Pure Earth launched its first strategic fundraising initiative, “Campaign for 10 Million Lives,” with the goal of raising $10 million over three years, enabling the organization to expand in all areas including pilot projects that cleanup contaminated sites and polluting work practices; research; and policy and public education campaigns. Ten million lives will benefit from this important campaign.
