Service Coordinator, The Choice at Shriver Center – University of Maryland, Baltimore County

Fields: racial justice, job training, youth, poverty, correctional system

Location: Hyattsville, Maryland

About the Organization: The Choice Program is administered by The Shriver Center, the service-learning and community engagement hub of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). The Choice Program has served over 20,000 youth in Maryland for 30 years. The Choice Program strengthens communities through innovative, family-focused strategies to connect youth to educational and vocational opportunities. The Choice Program at UMBC is grounded in theoretical perspective and values that focus on dismantling racist structures and approaches to human service work and, instead, employ strengths-based approaches focused on positive relationships and self-agency. As a primary target of The Choice Program is to reduce the number of youth of color in the juvenile justice and detention systems, these guiding principles are essential in addressing racial inequities on individual and systemic levels.

The Choice Program translates this theory into action as a community-based alternative to incarceration. The Choice program carries out its mission through four components: developing high expectations, offering opportunities for youth to engage in meaningful activities, fostering connections to positive role models, and linking youth and families to community resources. Intervention strategies and activities, including collaborative relationships with families and schools, facilitate healthy developmental processes and positive outcomes in program youth. The Choice model aligns itself with anti-racism and puts this into action through a focus on restorative practices, trauma-informed care and applied critical race theory.
