Editorial & Digital Engagement Internships at The American Prospect

Fields: journalism, politics, media, writing, communications

Location: DC,

About the Organization: The American Prospect’s mission is summed up in the phrase “liberal intelligence” that runs under the logo on the magazine’s cover. We aim to advance liberal and progressive goals through reporting, analysis, and debate about today’s realities and tomorrow’s possibilities. We look for articles that make sense of the world and illuminate what could be done to repair it. Much of what we publish concerns the relation between policy and politics: how to build public support for policies that serve the greater good. We pay particular attention to efforts to renew American democracy and civic life and to revitalize the social movements that can help achieve a more just society.

About the Position: The Prospect offers an editorial internship and a digital engagement and social media internship. Digital interns will work closely with the editorial interns, and are also encouraged to contribute editorially and assist in fact-checking and research for the print magazine. Editorial and digital interns assist the editorial department with fact-checking and research for the print magazine and also assist with the daily production of The American Prospect’s website. Interns are encouraged to contribute editorially and participate in meetings in addition to pursuing their own projects under the guidance of staff members. The internship program features brown-bag lunches with guest speakers from local media and progressive organizations. We encourage interns to fully integrate themselves into the operations of the magazine while taking full advantage of the events and hearings only available in Washington, D.C. Please specify in your application if you are interested in the editorial or the digital internship.

Special Requirements/Qualifications: Applicants should have an interest in politics and journalism. Knowledge of HTML is a plus, as is research and fact-checking experience.

Estimated Salary: $1,400 monthly stipend (for full-time work). This works out to $8.75/hour.

ALERT: The maximum salary is LESS than the living wage for this area.

The American Prospect will assist in arranging for academic or work-study credit whenever possible.
