About the Organization: The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) is an independent national nonprofit whose scientists and engineers work to solve some of our planet’s most pressing environmental and safety problems. UCS combines technical analysis and effective organizing and advocacy to create innovative, practical solutions for stemming the tide of global warming, sustainable food policy and agriculture, energy and transportation, fighting misinformation and reducing the threat of catastrophic nuclear war.

About the Position: The Union of Concerned Scientists is looking for a motivated student or recent graduate for UCS’s “Baker Internship” in media relations. This opportunity will provide participants with media experience working on exciting communication strategies at a leading national advocacy organization. The Baker intern will have an opportunity to work with UCS programs focused on addressing global warming, expanding clean energy, cleaning up the U.S. vehicle fleet, reforming the agricultural system, reducing nuclear weapons threats, and ensuring science is properly used in government decision making.

The Baker Media Internship was founded through the generous bequest of the late C. Edwin (Ed) Baker, one of the country’s foremost authorities on free speech, the First Amendment, and mass media policy. The internship is designed to help further his interest in elevating science and policy issues through the media. The Baker Internship is for college students and recent graduates from demographic groups that are historically underrepresented in the sciences and or environmental advocacy.

Special Requirements/Qualifications: Candidates should be able to demonstrate excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, strong oral and written communication skills, and proficiency with computers. Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel and Outlook. Also needed are excellent interpersonal relations skills, as well as an ability to work both independently and in teams. Interest in science, the environment, or media issues strongly preferred.

At UCS, comparable training and/or experience can be substituted for degrees when appropriate. UCS is continually seeking to diversify its staff. In particular, we’re dedicated to broadening opportunities for individuals from demographic groups that are historically underrepresented in the sciences and in environmental advocacy. We’re also committed to building an inclusive workplace culture where talented people of widely diverse backgrounds can thrive. We’ve adopted this commitment because we believe the inclusion of culturally diverse perspectives will improve our work and produce better societal and environmental outcomes for all, including historically disenfranchised communities. We are actively seeking people who bring diverse backgrounds and perspectives to join us in this work.
