Government Relations & Public Affairs Internships (Fall): Legislative, Communications at Legal Services Corporation

About the Organization: The Legal Services Corporation (LSC) is the country’s single largest funder of civil legal aid for low-income Americans. Established in 1974, LSC operates as an independent 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation that promotes equal access to justice and provides grants for high-quality civil legal assistance. LSC currently funds 133 independent, nonprofit legal aid organizations with nearly 800 offices throughout the nation.

About the Position: The Office of Government Relations & Public Affairs (GRPA) is responsible for managing LSC’s communications and relationship with Congress, the Executive Branch, the media, and the general public. The intern’s hours will be up to 20 hours per week. The internship will run from late August through mid-December 2018.

Legislative

The primary objectives of the internship are for the intern to:

  • Understand the relationship between legislative affairs and communications.
  • Acquire a sound understanding of how the federal appropriations process works.

The intern’s principle duties and responsibilities include:

  • Respond to congressional inquiries;
  • Track legislation and monitor congressional activity;
  • Research and write materials for congressional staff and LSC publications;
  • Update databases; and other research projects as assigned.
Communications

The primary objectives of the internship are for the intern to:

  • Understand the relationship between legislative affairs and communications.
Learn how to develop accurate and rapid messages for different audiences.
  • The intern’s principle duties and responsibilities include:
  • Update and help improve website content;
  • Draft news releases, media alerts, and other media materials;
  • Track electronic and print media;
  • Assist in the development and updating of media lists and other databases;
  • Monitor social media;
  • For those equipped to do so, assisting with video editing.

Familiarity with Final Cut Pro X and content managing systems (particularly Drupal) is a plus.

 

Special Requirements/Qualifications: LSC is accepting applications from current undergraduate, graduate, and law school students. Ideal candidates can work independently, will have excellent research and writing skills and an interest in government, public policy, communications, and messaging. The intern needs to have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office projects (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Estimated Salary: Hourly rate is based on class year: $12.90-$15.90 for undergraduates and $16.90-$18.90 for graduate/law students.
