About the Organization: Virginia Organizing is a non-partisan statewide grassroots organization dedicated to challenging injustice by empowering people in local communities to address issues that affect the quality of their lives. Virginia Organizing especially encourages the participation of those who have traditionally had little or no voice in our society. By building relationships with individuals and groups throughout the state, Virginia Organizing strives to get them to work together, democratically and non-violently, for change.
About the Position: Want to have an exciting adventure this summer and learn more about how to change the world? Want to learn community organizing skills from community leaders and a staff with decades of experience? Virginia Organizing is seeking applicants for the Summer 2019 Social Justice Internship Program. Interns will learn specific community organizing and democratic leadership skills to put in their civic engagement toolboxes. In a workshop setting, interns will learn how to do a power analysis of a community, how to develop a campaign strategy, how leadership development fits into the daily work of an organizer, building relationships through intentional one-to-one conversations, different models of change, and more. Interns will also “shadow” community organizers as they do their daily activities: attend chapter meetings, rallies, media conferences, meetings with elected officials, and more. In addition, interns will get to do the actual work of door-knocking, phone banking, flyering for events, researching for a campaign, and helping with local fundraising events. Internships will be full-time from Monday, July 1 – Friday, August 16, 2019, and will be located in Charlottesville. There are eight positions available.
Special Requirements/Qualifications: Not given
Estimated Salary: All interns will be provided with free housing, a $2,000 stipend, and reimbursement for any travel expenses.
Deadline: April 1, 2019
