About the Organization: Pine Tree Legal Assistance and Maine’s legal aid providers provide free legal help to Maine residents who can’t afford private counsel and who face serious non-criminal problems.
About the Position: Pine Tree Legal Assistance has an immediate opening for a full-time paralegal based in our Lewiston Office. The paralegal will work closely with a staff attorney on a project addressing high levels of lead exposure among children in the Lewiston area. The paralegal will be expected to participate in outreach activities, respond to requests for legal help from low-income individuals, work-up cases under the supervision of an attorney, and provide support with various office duties. Under attorney supervision, the paralegal will also provide legal assistance to eligible clients, including documenting warranty of habitability issues in clients’ homes and performing lead tests, client counseling and negotiations with opposing parties, and general litigation support (including work with clients to gather appropriate authorizations or records and service of subpoenas). This project is funded through 2019, with the potential for renewal.
Special Requirements/Qualifications:
- Is able to communicate effectively with potential clients (including those with limited English or who face other communication barriers) and treats all clients and potential clients with respect;
- Maintains a professional demeanor with outside agencies and groups, opposing parties, opposing counsel and other participants in the civil justice system.
- Observes the highest standards of integrity and ethical conduct and takes personal responsibility for one’s actions.
Estimated Salary: Starting salary is $34,750+, DOE. Benefits include paid vacation, sick and parenting leave to its staff, as well as paid dental and health insurance for employees and their families.
