Details and Requirements: Casa Cornelia Law Center provides quality pro bono legal services to victims of human and civil rights violations. Its services include representation to those seeking asylum and related protection due to persecution and/or torture; immigrant victims of domestic violence, human trafficking and other serious crimes who are eligible under U.S. law; and representation of detained unaccompanied children and non-detained children in removal proceedings. The Children’s Program provides pro bono legal representation to children seeking immigration legal relief. The Legal Assistant will assist in scheduling and coordinating legal screenings and/or clinics, giving “Know Your Rights” presentations, drafting case summaries, compiling information for court motions, and making referrals to other legal and social services organizations. The Legal Assistant will have primary responsibility for tracking and documenting the status and progress of all cases of detained children and corresponding data entry.
Candidates must have the following qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college/university, substantial university course work completed or Paralegal training and certificate from an ABA-accredited paralegal program; and, experience working or volunteering with children strongly preferred; Fluent and literate in Spanish; great communication (oral and written) and public speaking skills. The candidate must be compassionate, detailed oriented, organized, responsible, dependable, flexible, and a multi-tasker able to work in a dynamic environment as a member of a team. The candidate must have leadership skills and a professional demeanor. The candidate must possess a California driver’s license and reliable transportation. Knowledge of Abacus case management system is a plus. Preference will be given to candidates that have worked in the area of immigration law or have more than a year of legal support experience. The candidate must demonstrate a commitment to serve victims and fully support the mission of Casa Cornelia. Public interest law knowledge and interest strongly preferred. Work hours are full-time/35 hours a week at $16-19/hour. START DATE: July 2, 2018
