Part-Time Event Assistant at Housing Works Bookstore Cafe

Details and Requirements: Coordinates and executes approximately 100 public events annually (an average of 2 to 3 per week), including literary, comedy, storytelling, and music events. The ideal candidate has some events experience, basic A/V skills, is social-media savvy, confident working with all kinds of people, a passion for health justice and advocacy, and a strong engagement with any or all aspects of contemporary arts and culture.

REQUIREMENTS: Availability nights (typically until 9:30PM but occasionally later), as well as occasional weekends is absolutely required; Must be comfortable lifting and moving heavy stage equipment (the assistant will be expected to head the set-up and break-down of our 250-person events space). A college degree or equivalent is preferred but not required, demonstrable skills, passion, and experience are equally as important. Knowledge of, experience with, or interest in literature, music, comedy, and other cultural programming is strongly preferred. Must be comfortable with public speaking and possess confident stage presence, interacting with authors and performers from small press poets to national celebrities, lifting and moving heavy stage equipment. The ideal candidate is: Worldly, assertive, and creative; Fast working, creative, and can respond to spontaneous requests and troubleshoot unexpected situations; Independent, professional, and demonstrate an excellent work ethic; Able to work easily with diverse partners and constituencies, including an almost entirely volunteer staff; Have a strong commitment to Housing Works’ mission of eradicating homelessness and AIDS.
